Exploring colour
Follow in depth exercises exploring five basic criteria for colour identity and gain confidence using colour in your work. You will learn to identify shades of white, and look at tone, hue, temperature and saturation using a range of materials including pastels, paint and collage techniques.
Ability: Intermediate

The tutor also recommends how you can develop your work further so that you can continue to use the skills acquired on this course for future projects. - A1 or A2 drawing board
Materials Exercise One
- A1 or A2 Cartridge paper, a standard white or off-white between 130-200gsm without texture
- 1B Pencil
- Set of acrylic paints. A standard range of colours would include the following but use what you have, it is not necessary to buy them all. (Please note that individual manufacturers have their own names for generic colours and that between watercolour, oils, acrylics and gouaches these names will differ):Titanium White, Prussian Blue, Colbalt Blue, Ceurealean Blue, Ultramarine, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Cimson. Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Terra Verte (Chromium Dioxide), Viridian (Phthalo), Cadmium Green, Ivory Black.
- Brushes - it is as important to have large as it is small fine brushes. House painting brushes can be good as can synthetic brushes. You will have to build your collection as you need them but start with a basic set

- Conte pastel sticks – black, white and sanguine
- A1 or A2 Paper – 1 sheet of each of black, warm grey, green grey, dark grey
