About this event

  • 6 hours

This workshop is aimed at people who have a basic knowledge of wild flower identification, but tend to shy away from grasses and their relatives as 'difficult'! Their mysteries will be dissolved by becoming familiar with just a few common species, so that you learn what to look for and where to find it.

We start by recognising how much grasses etc have in common with flowers like buttercups and bluebells, and how they differ. Then we see how to tell a grass from a sedge and a sedge from a rush. By the ed of the day, you will be confidently identifying a dozen or so grasses, sedges and rushes, giving you a kick-start to further study.

As part of the course, you will receive a booklet on Grass ID and another one on Sedges & Rushes to take away with you and help you with further identification.

Instructor - Faith Anstey has been running workshops for the BSBI for seven years in plant ID for beginners and improvers. In connection with these, she has produced several small books on plant families, grasses, sedges etc. These can be used with the appropriate field guide to make the identification of common species quicker and easier than by traditional methods.

What to bring - Please bring a packed lunch, refreshments will be available. We will be outside for parts of the day so please check the weather forecast and come prepared. We will be using the wildlife garden at Jupiter which has long grass and uneven grounds. Notepad & pen, If you have your own hand lens & guide books then bring them along. We recommend the Collins Wildflower Guide or The Wild Flower Key by Francis Rose.
