For much of the year, plants are not in flower. Many can still be identified using other features. This course explores how to do this using Poland & Clement’s “The Vegetative Key to the British Flora”.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of how to use a key successfully
- Display confidence in identifying flowering plants
Who should attend? – A basic understanding of botanical species and terminology would be beneficial for this course.

Prior knowledge – No prior knowledge will be assumed; participants with at least some prior knowledge may find it a little easier to build on their existing learning, but it isn’t necessary.

Day 1
Morning: Whilst you will identify some species in the area around the venue, you will also spend time indoors so that you can see the detail of the plant material which will be provided.
You will cover:
- How the key works (and how it differs from other, more familiar keys)
- The vocabulary needed to use the key effectively
Afternoon: field visit to look at flowering plants and trees
Day 2
Out in the field looking at other groups such as as grasses, sedges, rushes, ferns
Please note accommodation, refreshments and an evening meal are not included.
