The British Ecological Society is delighted to organise this symposium in collaboration with the Ecological Continuity Trust, Natural England, National Trust, RSPB, Woodland Trust, WWF, and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.
Resilient Landscapes for People, Nature and Climate: Connecting science and practice communities to create a roadmap for the future.

Many organisations are working with landowners to create an ever-increasing number of large landscape projects to secure a more resilient future for our climate, people and nature. Most are multi-faceted intending multiple outcomes crossing the environmental, social and economic spectrum.
This 2-day BES symposium at the University of Birmingham supports the creation of a more cohesive community around large-scale land, freshwaters and coastal/marine systems and is the first of a series of connected events delivered by our partnership (which is open to new members) to encourage the sharing of best practice, promote more standardised and effective monitoring and evaluation approaches and support the development of new projects to enhance our evidence base and ensure the most impactful outcomes.
This event is part of a series BES activities to take forward two of the five research priorities identified by the community in our “The Future of Ecological Research in the UK: A research agenda for the next 25 years”. These two priorities are Living Labs and Wholescapes.
Our Partners
The partnership and steering committee for this event includes representatives from the British Ecological Society, working alongside the Ecological Continuity Trust, Natural England, National Trust, RSPB, Woodland Trust, WWF, and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, bringing perspectives from a range of experiences.
Call for abstracts
The programme will include high-profile invited speakers, as well as speakers and posters selected from a Call for Abstracts process, focusing on projects which are > 500 hectares in size and which are a single site or cluster of smaller sites. These projects will be evidence driven and have ambitions to secure multiple outcomes including the capture of co-benefits, trade-offs and spill-over effects of working at scale. There will also be a strong focus on discussion and collaboration between delegates to identify key barriers and opportunities as well as to create a clear roadmap for future, evidence-led working.
There will be a poster session too, for those who would like to present in an informal but more focused way.

Who should attend?
We are very keen for this to be a transdisciplinary event and welcome contributors and attendees from practice, academia, policy, industry, commerce, infrastructure, agriculture and more.
There are really strong reasons to attend this event, whether or not you are presenting. With a focus on facilitated discussion and collaboration the intention is that all delegates contribute to the process and return to their place of work with a new sense of purpose, having had really valuable and inspiring conversations and a chance to properly reflect on their own projects.

*Concession Member is a BES member-only rate and includes students and retired members.
** If you are attending the meeting and have a partner, or other person who does not wish to attend the scientific programme but would like to come along to the social programme, this rate covers all lunches, coffee breaks and poster sessions.
*** If you are coming along to the meeting with children and both parents/carers wish to attend the scientific programme, we understand that half of your time as a parent will be looking after your child. A discounted registration is offered for both carers. Similarly, if you are attending as a single carer and will be looking after your child for part of the time, you can register at this rate.
Please note we are only able to offer invoices in exceptional circumstances and only up to 2 weeks before the registration deadline to ensure these can be processed in time. Payment via invoice will incur an admin fee of £15. Group bookings of up to 6 can be made online and paid by card.
We will not be offering onsite registration at this event.
Cancellation
In the unlikely event of the symposium being cancelled we will offer a full refund to all delegates.
For all other cancellations, the standard cancellation policy applies:
- If cancellation is received before 17:00 (BST), Friday 24 May 2024, the full registration fee will be given
- If cancellation is received after 17:00 (BST), Friday 24 May, but before 17:00 (BST), Friday 7 June, 50% of the registration fee will be refunded.
- No refunds will be given after 17:00 (BST), Friday 7 June 2024
