Wind Turbine Building Workshop

We are really excited to be offering a five day Wind Turbine Building Workshop this Autumn, led by Jonathan Schreiber from PureSelfMade.

Jonathan built his first wind turbine at age 13. He later worked with the legendary Hugh Piggott, who developed designs for a simple, hand-built wind turbine.

These “Hugh Piggott” turbines are now widely used for off-grid energy production across the UK and beyond. The robust design is built to last and produces a useful amount of electricity. It is superior to cheap, imported Chinese wind turbines.

What we will be doing?

A “Hugh Piggott” wind turbine in Scotland

We will be building a 3m diameter “Hugh Piggott” wind turbine. It will form part of the off-grid electricity system of Dyfed Permaculture Farm Trust.

Our aim is to complete the turbine during the week, install it on a pre-prepared tower, and get it generating electricity before everyone goes home! This is an opportunity not often offered on courses of this type.

There is so much to learn on this workshop!

From hand shaping the wooden rotor blades, learning about and manufacturing the generator and electrics to assembling and welding the steel frame and tail furling system.

Above are images from some of Jonathan’s previous workshops. There is lots of information about the skills you might learn on Jonathan’s website, towards the bottom of this page.

Who is the workshop for?

Any one who is interested!

  • Maybe you want to learn the skills to build your own turbine?
  • Or you are curious about how the process works?
  • Or you would like to learn practical skills that can be transferred to other projects?
  • Or you think you will enjoy spending a week working with other people to create something practical!
